The Best Waterproof Drugstore Mascaras That Rival Définicils

3 Drugstore Mascaras That Work Wonders On My Uncurlable Lashes

Given how much I love having long, lush Twiggy lashes, I consider mine quite stubborn. The tops are difficult to curl (like trying to curl hay) and the bottoms are virtually nonexistent. This is why I have some damn high standards for mascara — my all-time favorite being Lancôme Définicils Waterproof High Definition Mascara. Définicils is even ranked the number-one waterproof mascara Rank & Style, a nifty site that uses an intelligent algorithm to calculate top-ranked products.

But here’s the problem: I have Veuve Cliquot taste, but my budget is more California Spumante. It’s annoying to spend $27.50 every two to three months (which you must to avoid bacterial accumulation), so I sought out to find the cheaper alternatives that were just as good.

I used Définicils as the benchmark in which I would rate my other products. After lots of bristle action, I found the top three drugstore picks that are now in full rotation.

First: Why Lancôme Définicils is That Awesome

Lancome Definicils Waterproof Mascara

Lancome Definicils Waterproof High Definition Mascara ($27.50)

What it promises: This iconic, award-winning mascara creates ultra-long, perfectly defined and separated lashes (zero tarantula legs!). Carefully selected polymers coat each lash from root to tip to help lengthen and outline each lash for unmatched definition. This best-selling mascara’s unique brush applicator has specially grooved bristles that hold the perfect amount of product for gradual, even application every time.

My take: My lashes looked noticeably longer, so much so that I was asked if I had lash extensions. It also didn’t clump or flake off — not even underneath my lower lashes, which usually happens when I apply mascara (especially in the summer). The bristles on the brush made it easy to coat each and every last lash, including the baby barely-there hair along the lower lashline (my trouble area), without gooping on too much product. It didn’t run, even after a day I spent teaching yoga followed by my own workout.

Flower Zoom-In Ultimate Mascara

Flower Zoom-In Ultimate Mascara $9.99

What it promises: This mascara from Drew Barrymore’s makeup line claims it transforms lashes from fine to full, creating extra definition and dramatic length. It includes D-panthenol to stimulate growth and rice wax to provide color that won’t smudge. It offers customizable volume and length utilizing its unique adjustable brush that twists into three different shapes: The first setting lengthens lashes, the second adds volume and the third curls and lifts lashes. Fancy!

My verdict: The adjustable brush gave me complete control (and it was easy to apply) in customizing both the volume and length of my lashes. The multi-tasker in me loved that I could do a more natural look by day but dial up the drama for a date night. I felt my lashes definitely looked longer, fuller, defined and it even made my eyes look more open and awake despite my 5 a.m. wake-up alarm.

Best for: Lengthening

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise ($8.99)

What it promises: Treat your lashes to a vacation in paradise with the line’s latest feature: a new, smooth-glide formula for volume, length and richer pigment. It also utilizes a soft, wavy 200+ bristle brush to create a feathery, soft and extra-full fringe.

My verdict: I wore this on a beach day where I began by taking a yoga class followed by kicking back in the sand (and hazy humidity). The brush really did seem like it grabbed each lash, making my lashes look longer, darker and super-full. My lashes felt soft and it was easy to apply without any excess flaking or clumping.

Best for: Featherweight Fullness

Rimmel London Scandaleyes Retroglam Waterproof Mascara

Rimmel London Scandaleyes Retroglam Waterproof Mascara ($5.99)

What it promises: Nab a bold, wide-eyed, false-lash look in just one simple stroke that coats each individual lash. This mascara’s exclusive hour-glass brush is shaped to plump lashes by fanning them up and out for dramatic volume without clumps.

My take: I tried this on a day when I was heading from a Pilates class straight to a meeting without time to reapply eye makeup. I liked the shape of the brush — it really did feel like it was simultaneously curling my lashes as it added volume and length. It definitely made my eyes look bigger and my lashes longer and extra, extra-full!

Best for: Volumizing and Curling
