Acids for Your Skin
There are acids for your skin that have been used for ages. They’re often referred to as workhorses in the land of skin care professionals. Depending on the acid, they can loosen dead skin cells, act as moisturizers, fade dark spots and bring acne causing bacteria to a halt.
Here are 6 of the more well known acid ingredients for your skin care.
Hyaluronic Acids are the humectants that attract and hold onto about 1000 times its weight in water. This plumps and moisturizes your skin from within. Your body can actually produce hyaluronic acid.
As with a lot of things, the natural production slows, leaving your skin prone to sagging and wrinkles. Manufacturers have found a way to make hyaluronic acid microscopic, enabling it as an ingredient to get down into the deeper layers of your skin. This provides more moisture for softer, smoother skin.
Lactic Acids are alpha hydroxy acids as are all the other acids in this article. Because lactic acid for your skin is typically derived from milk, it does a more gentle job of removing dead skin cells from your skin. Lactic acids also hydrate your skin and can be found in some cleansers making it a more effective way to remove dirt and debris from your skin.
Kojic Acids is the natural skin care ingredient known as the spot sapper. I works like hydroquinone shutting off cells that are producing problems such as dark spots. Hydroquinone has been said to play a role in hormone disruption as well as contribute to other organ dysfunction, therefore it’s use has been banned in some countries and minimized in others.
Kojic acid is the natural alternative to hydroquinone. It’s derived from mushrooms and can shut down the cells that produce pigment or color in your skin. It’s being used in products to minimize and reduce dark spots.
Azelaic acids are derived from wheat, grains and barley kelp. They help stop the constant production of melanocytes halting the appearance of dark spots and hyper-pigmentation. This acid is also known to help unclog pores and protect against infection. They act as antibacterial and antioxidants when caring for your skin.
Glycolic Acid is the most used acid in professional peels that are done by doctors. It’s typically gotten from sugarcane and you’ll find it used in many toners, serums and mask as well as peels. Glycolic acids are also known to stimulate collagen and thicken your outermost layer of skin for an overall anti-aging effect. The key is not to have or use so many products that contain glycolic acids that your skin begins to look and feel like rubber.
You’ll need to understand that while peels containing glycolic acid are used to even out your skin tone, they also make your skin more sensitive to UV light. This makes it imperative to use a good sunscreen afterwards if you choose to get a chemical peel. Fruit peels are less invasive when it comes to melanated skin. However, you should still take caution when it comes to peels and your skin.
A good skin care regimen …
These acids are used to help you with your skin care needs and to be added to your skin care regimen when needed. It’s important to remember that a good skin care regimen will always have your skin looking its best.
That’s it for this week. As always,
