Did your beautiful black skin survive the challenges of the pandemic? It’s been a bumpy ride, to say the least, for a lot of you. Even those of us in the beauty industry were faced with skin care challenges. From getting pimples, to lack of ingredients, to products, that weren’t always in supply.
Has Your Beautiful Black Skin Survived the Pandemic Challenges?
Most of you have survived your skin challenges brought on by the pandemic. Others of you are still finding your way. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. A simple skin care regimen of cleansing, toning and moisturizing will work wonders for you.
Find a good cream based cleanser. This allows you to keep your skin clean without harsh chemicals or detergents. Moisturize to keep your skin from drying out. One that is hyaluronic acid based is a good choice. Some oils will clog your pores. Tread waters carefully when using oil.
Just to maintain a basic skin care regimen proved difficult for some of you. Not just on the product side but mental health played a role in how you approached caring for your skin and hair.
Yes your mental health.
How Did Your Mental Health Play a Role in Caring For Your Beautiful Black Skin?
Mentally we were all impacted. You probably became challenged with more on your plate to deal with during the pandemic year, than in your lifetime for most of you.
Panic/Survival – For starters, the pandemic threw you and a lot of other people into panic and survival mode. You were not thinking about how you were going to care for your skin.
Your thoughts, were on how you were going to feed yourself and your family. Whether or not you could pay your rent or mortgage. When your basic needs are threatened, your skin and hair care become of minor concern.
Still, part of you knew that you had to find balance with your whole being. Skin problems become another thing to worry about and can certainly affect how you feel about yourself.
Stress can add to your skin care challenges. Panic and survival mode add stress to your situation. It all shows up in the appearance of your skin.
What Skin Care Challenges Showed Up During The Pandemic?
As if there weren’t already existing skin challenges, mask acne surfaced. Yes … behind the mask we all had to wear, was a breading ground for bacteria. You have enough to deal with when you clean your face on a daily basis. Imagine skipping washing your face, not to mention, putting on a used mask. This adds insult to injury.
With acne came inflammation challenges.
Not only is acne triggered by bacteria, oil and an unclean face, it’s often the result of bad eating habits. Acne is a form of inflammation in your skin. Foods can help or hinder your progress in riding yourself of acne challenged skin.
While some of you developed more oil in your skin, others of you saw dry skin coming into play. Dehydration from within as well as from without, brought on dry skin challenges.
You’re a Survivor …
Let’s face it, there have always been challenges for Black Folk to overcome. Your skin and hair, has weathered many storms and will get past this one. If anything, the pandemic has taken a lot of you towards more natural based products.
This alone is priceless. Your skin has had a chance to breathe, because you’re wearing less makeup. Your scalp is also breathing because you weren’t able to get your relaxers.
If nothing else, the pandemic taught a lot of you how to become resourceful and creative when caring for your skin.
That’s it for this week. As always …
