7 of The Best Natural Black Hair Care Ingredients

The best ingredients for hair care are on a long list. This list of seven ingredients will serve as a guide for what products you need to focus your attention on.

Shea Butter is widely known as a magical substance from Africa that provides healing to the body, moisture to the skin, and health to your hair. Shea butter comes from the nuts of the Karite Nut tree located in West and Central Africa. African women are able to work for good pay because they extract the butter from the nuts to then be sold.  Shea butter is a natural product that is not toxic.

Since it’s an emollient, it provides a layer of oil on top of the surface of your hair strand. This helps tremendously to reduce the amount of moisture or water lost when your hair dries.

Essentially, Shea butter works to “seal” in your hair’s moisture. Most, if not all-natural hair products contain a little or a lot of Shea butter.

Coconut oil is an oil extracted from the kernels of mature coconuts from coconut palms. It’s high in saturated fat, resistant to going rancid or spoiling. It can last up to two years.

There are many hair products on the market that contain coconut oil. It has excellent ability to seal moisture into the hair. In addition, coconut oil produces shine and strength for the hair shaft. With repeated use it makes the shine and strength a permanent part of your hair.

This is why coconut oil is such a popular ingredient in natural hair products. Many naturals also use coconut oil as a leave-in if their hair is a thick texture so that the moisture is longer lasting in their hair. Some of you use coconut oil to pre-condition your hair before you shampoo.

Not only butters and coconut oil …

Essential Oils are among the top ingredients for natural hair care for many reasons. They have been known to stimulate hair growth, minimize breakage and split ends as well as provide you with a beautiful aroma as you use them.

You should always use essential oils in conjunction with a carrier oil. Carrier oils are jojoba, olive, coconut and grape seed oils just to name a few. Another carrier product would be Shea butter. So you see, the ingredients listed in this very article can also serve as carriers for the essential oils and increase the benefits of their use.

Some essential oils to consider for natural hair care would be: Lavender, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Frankincense, Orange, Spearmint, Peppermint and Tea Tree. Be sure to do your home work before venturing into using essential oils.

Aloe Vera comes from the aloe vera plant well known for its restorative properties and ability to aid hair in retaining moisture. Normally, aloe vera is also used to promote hair growth and aid in scalp problems and hair loss because of the natural enzyme in aloe vera that stimulates your hair follicles.

So how do you apply aloe vera to your hair? The best way to apply aloe vera to your hair is to mix it in your shampoo, conditioner and/or hair gel. You can also apply aloe vera to your scalp as a massage treatment for at least 45 minutes before rinsing it out and applying your deep conditioner. Very quickly, you will notice a difference in your hair because you will have less hair loss and more volume in your hair.

Wait…there’s more

Honey is not only for your hot tea or to drizzle on top of a croissant. Honey actually works well for your hair. Naturally, honey works as a humectant when applied to your hair. A humectant is a product that promotes retention of moisture.

So this humectant is a perfect addition to a natural hair care regimen. Honey also has antibacterial properties, which promotes clean and moisturized hair. Honey will be a great treat for your hair.

Olive Oil is a beautiful oil that is natural to the Mediterranean and is very well known in the cooking world. This fat comes from the olive tree. It is produced by pressing whole olives until the oil is released. Not only do we see olive oil in cooking, but also in cosmetics, oil lamps, soaps, and of course, hair products.

In hair care, extra virgin olive oil, cold pressed-extracted with no chemical treatment, is the famous olive oil used in hair products. It seals and softens your hair. You can also put olive oil in your shampoo or conditioners, or you can use it as a deep conditioner for added shine and moisture.

Lastly …

Vegetable Glycerin is another natural product that acts as a humectant. This great product helps attract water to your natural hair, and thus helps to retain moisture in your hair. Vegetable glycerin not only helps to trap moisture/water into the hair shaft, but it also creates a layer of oil on top of the hair. If you couple vegetable glycerin with aloe vera you will have a great moisturizing product for your natural hair.
