What’s All the Talk About African American Skin Care?

What's All the Talk About African American Skin Care?

African American skin care. What’s all the talk? You’d think that as melanated people, especially in America, caring for our skin is something new. It isn’t. It’s not something we put on the back burner. On the contrary.

When I say caring for your skin, I’m referencing:

● Having a good skin care at-home regimen in place.
● Getting yourself a professional facial every three months
● Understanding the importance of ingredients and more importantly how to use them.

When it comes to your skin, you’re looking at something that’s very sensitive and beautiful at the same time. Your skin cannot handle a lot of products that are on the market. The ingredients, the formulations and how you use them, can make or break the appearance of your skin.

What do I mean by make or break the appearance of your skin? When you use a product on your skin that’s too harsh, you will get the opposite result of what you want. For instance, when you use an oily skin product on dry skin, results will definitely differ. Products for oily skin are meant to reduce the oil content. Using such a product on already dry skin will deplete oil levels that are already challenged.

African American Skin Is Super Sensitive

Your skin is super sensitive to begin with. Your melanin content, which gives you your beautiful assortment of hues, cannot take abuse of any kind. One of the main forms of abuse is over manipulation. Couple that with too much exfoliation and the wrong combination of ingredients for your skin challenges and you’ve got an even bigger problem.

In today’s environment especially after all the political unrest, there’s a lot of marketing and media that’s being directed towards you as an African American woman. You’re being promised products to care for your skin.

You asked companies for years to listen to what you wanted and in doing so they have come out in full force offering you a slew of products. Why now? When you said you’d take your money and purchase from people who cared and respected your plight, these companies went scurrying for a solution. What has to be taken into consideration is the Integrity of who’s offering a solution to your challenge.

It’s easy for a company to say their product will work for your skin challenges. The question becomes, is it the same product that has always been on the shelf and is being marketed to you with a face that looks like yours? Is it labeled to speak with a language that has your name in it … African-American, black skin, women of color? Your job is to become very astute at how you choose your products for your skin.

Not All Products Are Equal for African American Skin Care

There’s a lot of talk about your skin. Everyone wants to give you a solution to your challenges. Your job is to make sure that the solution offered, is one that will benefit you and not bring harm to your beautiful black skin.

Not all products are created equal,  when it comes to your skin. There will be a lot of commercials, ads and free giveaways directed towards you in hopes that you will choose the product of the person offering a solution for your challenges. This talk, in essence, is to get your money into their pockets.

There’s plenty of talk about African American Skin Care. Question becomes, will the talk benefit you and your skin?

That’s it for this week. As always …
