Hair Serums. Can They Help You With Your Natural Hair Challenges?

Hair Serums. Can They Help You With Your Natural Hair Challenges?

Hair serums.  Can they be one of the most versatile products in your hair care arsenal? They’re often used to help with thinning edges, hair growth, tame frizz, add shine, and protect your hair from the damage of heat.

There are serums for every hair type and concern. Finding the right one for your needs is key to achieving healthy, beautiful, natural hair.

If you’re struggling with natural hair challenges like hair growth, thinning edges, dryness, frizz, or breakage, a hair serum can be a game-changer.

Looking for a Hair Serum for Your natural hair?

With natural hair care challenges, you’re either plagued with hair loss, frizz, dryness, or breakage. Let’s take a look at each and how to handle it with a serum.

For Dry Hair:

If your natural hair is prone to dryness, this can often cause thinning of your edges. Look for a hair serum that contains hydrating ingredients like jojoba oil or glycerin. Applying your serum to damp hair will help absorption into your strands. You could also use it as a leave-in conditioner for extra hydration.

For Frizzy Hair:

If you battle frizz daily, silicone is one of the ingredients that’s said to help tame the frizz. However, long-term use of a silicone-based product can leave your hair in distress.

Coconut oil with an essential oil or two has been known to help with taming the frizz.

Does Your Hair Break?

A lot of us suffer from breakage because of dryness. So, if you’re struggling with breakage, look for a hair serum that contains protein. This will help to fortify your hair shaft and prevent future breakage.

Essential Oils and Carrier Oils for Natural Hair Serums

Some of you will want to try your hand at creating your own hair serums. Others of you will want your hair serums ready-made for purchase. If that’s the case we’ve got you covered.

For my “creators” here are a few tips. There are a few essential oils that can be used in natural hair serums to help with the challenges of each hair type.

Remember, essential oils should be diluted before use on your scalp.

For Dry Hair:

Avocado Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Jojoba Oil and Rosehip Seed Oil are good carrier oils for dry hair.

Lavender, Geranium, Sandalwood, and Ylang Ylang are good essential oils for dry hair.

For Frizzy Hair:

Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, and Macadamia Nut Oil are good carrier oils for frizzy hair challenges.

Lavender Essential Oil, Chamomile Essential Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil, Cedarwood Essential Oil diluted with a carrier oil will often help tame the frizz.

For Hair Breakage:

Lavender Essential Oil, Chamomile Essential Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil, Cedarwood Essential Oil, and Peppermint Essential Oil in a carrier oil can help fortify the hair shaft and prevent future breakage.

When using essential oils in a natural hair serum, be sure to start with a small amount and increase as needed.

Add one drop of the essential oil or oils at a time to the carrier oil or oils of your choice. Yes, you can combine carrier oils and create a blend. Experiment until you find the perfect blend for your hair type and needs.

How to Use Natural Hair Serums

Hair serums can be used on damp or dry hair. It’s typically applied to the ends of your hair, but can be used all over if your hair is particularly dry or damaged. If you have oily roots, avoid applying the serum to that area. A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount and increase as needed.

To use a hair serum, start by applying a small amount to the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to distribute the product evenly, then run your fingers through your hair, focusing on the ends.

Adding massage techniques is also a relaxing feature when adding serums to your scalp and hair. Not only does it feel good, but it also helps distribute the oils throughout your hair.

Conclusion

Hair serums can be helpful for those of you with natural hair challenges like thinning, dryness, frizz, or breakage. The key is to find one that will address your specific hair concerns.

Some essential oils and carrier oils can also help to hydrate and protect the hair shaft.

When using a hair serum, it’s a good idea to apply it to moist hair. Be sure to focus on working the serum to the ends of your hair. Start with a small amount and increase as needed. Remember, a little goes a long way.
