Heman’s inspiration for tackling skin cancer began during his childhood in Ethiopia, where he observed the harsh realities of people working long hours under the intense sun. When he moved to the United States, he became acutely aware of the dangers posed by prolonged exposure to UV radiation. This realization fueled his desire to create an accessible and affordable solution to combat skin cancer, a disease that often requires expensive treatment options.
From a young age, Heman was fascinated by science, often experimenting with household chemicals to satisfy his curiosity. These early experiences laid the foundation for his later work, where he transitioned from mixing potions in his bedroom to developing a soap with the potential to save lives.
The turning point in Heman’s journey came when he participated in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. This competition provided him with a platform to share his innovative idea of a skin cancer-treating soap. Heman chose soap as the vehicle for delivering the treatment because of its universal use; nearly everyone uses soap daily, making it an ideal way to reach a broad audience.
The science behind Heman’s soap involves lipid-based nanoparticles that carry a drug called imiquimod. When the soap is applied to the skin, the nanoparticles ensure that the drug remains on the skin even after the soap is rinsed off, providing a localized treatment at a molecular level. This innovative approach could revolutionize how skin cancer is treated, making it more accessible to those who need it most.
Mentorship played a crucial role in Heman’s success. He credits his mentors with not only helping him acquire the necessary ingredients but also teaching him how to synthesize the lipid-based nanoparticles essential to his soap’s effectiveness. Looking ahead, Heman hopes to turn his skin cancer-treating soap into a not-for-profit organization, ensuring that it reaches people in need, regardless of their financial situation.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Heman is a typical teenager who enjoys playing in his school’s marching band, playing chess, reading, and shooting hoops on the basketball court. He emphasizes that these hobbies are not about excelling but about having fun and taking a break from his scientific endeavors.
Heman’s message to other young innovators is one of hope and encouragement: there is always room for new ideas and inventions in this world. His work is a testament to the power of curiosity, creativity, and determination, proving that even at a young age, one can make a significant difference in the world.
