Black-Owned Businesses in LA Rally for Wildfire Relief

In the face of raging wildfires that have scarred parts of Los Angeles, a force of resilience has emerged from the ashes: the city’s Black-owned businesses.

As flames threaten homes and livelihoods, these local enterprises have become beacons of hope, demonstrating the power of community solidarity in times of crisis.

From restaurateurs serving hot meals to fashion brands donating essential supplies, these businesses are redefining what it means to be part of a community under siege.

Nourishing the Community

Earle’s on Crenshaw, a beloved local eatery, has joined forces with a Pasadena church to distribute not only their famous hot dogs but also groceries, clothing, hygiene products, and baby supplies to fire victims.

Mr. Fries Man has partnered with First AME Zion Church to provide meals and essential supplies to some of the most vulnerable members of the community—seniors, children, and families impacted by the wildfires.

Taco Mell has taken a unique approach by focusing on the often-overlooked heroes of this crisis—the first responders. They’ve been distributing burritos to firefighters battling the blaze, as well as to displaced residents, embodying their commitment to giving back to the community.

Beyond Food: Providing Essential Resources

Octavia’s Bookshelf, a Pasadena bookstore, has temporarily shifted its focus from literature to lifelines. The store has become a hub for distributing free essential supplies, including bottled water, hygiene items, clothing, and food to locals displaced or affected by the wildfires.

WalkGoodLA, a nonprofit organization founded by Etienne Maurice, has mobilized to collect and distribute food, clothing, and other necessities to hundreds of residents affected by the fires. Their quick response highlights the agility of community-based organizations in times of crisis.

Sweet Support and Caffeine for a Cause

Even businesses not directly involved in food distribution are finding creative ways to contribute. Carla’s Fresh Market, a local food market, is hosting a bake sale with proceeds benefiting World Central Kitchen, an organization providing meals to families and first responders affected by the fires.

Sailor’s Brew Coffee, an online-only, single-origin coffee company founded in Pasadena, has partnered with Perry’s Joint Sandwiches to provide complimentary continental breakfast every Sunday for those affected by the fires.

Fashion and Lifestyle Brands Join the Cause

The fashion and lifestyle sector has also stepped up to provide essential items to those in need. Tote & Carry, a luggage company, has donated luggage to evacuation centers and shelters in Pasadena and Altadena, helping those who had to leave their homes quickly.

Athleisure brand, Actively Black, joined the relief efforts by donating new clothing to those affected by the wildfires. Their contribution is particularly timely, as many donation spots were no longer accepting used clothing due to overwhelming responses from the community.

Coordinating Aid and Fundraising

AfroPunk has joined forces with WalkGood LA, Spill, and other community-driven organizations to support recovery efforts for Black families affected by the fires in Altadena and Pasadena. Their initiative, “Community Aid Dena,” provides a curated list of verified GoFundMe campaigns, enabling direct aid to those who have lost everything in the devastating fire.

These Black-owned businesses and organizations demonstrate the extraordinary impact of community-centered entrepreneurship. Their comprehensive approach—combining immediate assistance with long-term support through fundraising and resource distribution—reveals how local businesses can be powerful catalysts for community care and resilience.
