MedHaul Raises Nearly $7 Million to Improve Medical Transportation Access

MedHaul, a Memphis-based startup founded by Erica Plybeah, has raised nearly $7 million to date to expand its non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) platform.

The digital platform addresses a critical gap in healthcare accessibility by providing reliable transportation for under-resourced and vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, disabled individuals, and those in low-income or rural areas.

A Mission Born from Personal Experience

MedHaul was founded in the heart of the Memphis Medical District, inspired by Plybeah’s personal struggle to secure reliable transportation for her grandmother, a Type-2 diabetic with a double-leg amputation.

Like many families in underserved communities, Plybeah’s family faced the harsh reality that missing critical medical appointments was often the only option due to a lack of transportation services.

Determined to find a solution, Plybeah conducted extensive research and discovered that accessible, high-quality non-emergency transportation was virtually nonexistent in many parts of the country.

Rather than accepting the status quo, she took matters into her own hands and created MedHaul—a platform designed to ensure that no patient has to miss a medical appointment due to transportation barriers.

Enhancing Access to Care

MedHaul’s platform simplifies the scheduling and delivery of NEMT services by matching patients’ specific transportation needs—such as wheelchair or stretcher accessibility—with vetted providers.

This solution has significantly improved healthcare outcomes, increasing the percentage of patients attending medical appointments on time from 40% to 92%. By addressing transportation as a social determinant of health, MedHaul aims to reduce missed appointments, improve patient outcomes, and lower healthcare costs.

Funding Milestones

Since its inception, MedHaul has secured funding from a variety of sources, including healthcare venture capital firms and social impact grants. Notable investors include Citi Ventures, Morgan Stanley’s Multicultural Innovation Lab, and Google for Startups. The most recent funding round in early 2025, led by InvestTN’s Growth Fund, contributed to the company’s total funding of nearly $7 million.

Expanding Impact

With this capital, MedHaul plans to broaden its reach across the U.S., focusing on underserved communities that face the greatest challenges in accessing medical care.

The company also seeks to raise awareness among healthcare organizations about the financial and clinical benefits of adopting transportation solutions like MedHaul.

Today, MedHaul partners with healthcare facilities, research institutions, and community organizations to fulfill its mission of ensuring every person, in every community, has a safe, cost-effective, and reliable transportation option for non-emergency medical care.
