Detroit’s First Black-Owned Brewery Set to Open
Detroit’s craft beer scene is about to welcome a groundbreaking addition as Roar Brewing Co., the city’s first Black-owned brewery, prepares to open its doors. Founded by U.S. Air Force veteran Evan Fay, the brewery will soft launch on Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Midtown’s former Nain Rouge Brewery location at 666 Selden St.
The brewery’s name and concept capture Detroit’s vibrant energy – from the roar of sports fans and live music to muscle cars and F-22 fighter jets. Fay’s vision is to create an inclusive space that makes craft beer approachable while fostering community connections.
Brewery Offerings
Roar Brewing Co. focuses on a simple, accessible beer selection. Its flagship brew will be a Honey Oat Stout, complemented by staples including Roar Pilsner, Roar Wheat Beer, and Roar Saison. Visitors can enjoy brewery tours that highlight both the brewing process and Detroit’s rich beer history.
Community Focus
Fay envisions Roar as more than just a place to drink beer. The establishment will host Detroit sports watch parties, live music performances, karaoke, and various social gatherings. An outdoor patio and three-and-a-half-seasons room will provide additional seating options during warmer months.
Breaking Barriers
Roar Brewing Co.’s opening marks a significant milestone in an industry where Black-owned breweries represent less than 1% of all U.S. breweries. In developing his business, Fay collaborated with the National Black Brewers Association and other breweries to navigate the challenges of entering the craft beer market.
Looking Ahead
While the soft launch happens this Sunday, Roar Brewing Co. plans a grand opening celebration later in summer 2025. Fay hopes his venture will inspire other aspiring brewers from diverse backgrounds to enter the craft beer industry.
As Detroit’s first Black-owned brewery, Roar Brewing Co. represents both a milestone for the city’s craft beer scene and a step toward greater industry diversity. With its community-centered approach and welcoming beer selection, it promises to be a vibrant addition to Detroit’s cultural landscape.
