From Church Campus to Economic Engine: Woodlawn Central’s $895 Million Transformation
In Chicago’s historic Woodlawn neighborhood, a transformative $895 million development is taking shape under the leadership of J. Byron Brazier.
Woodlawn Central will reimagine the Apostolic Church of God’s 11-acre campus, creating a dynamic hub of innovation, culture, and community-driven progress.
“This is about building with the community, not around it,” explains Brazier, whose vision is deeply rooted in family legacy. As the son of Dr. Byron T. Brazier and grandson of Bishop Arthur M. Brazier, J. Byron continues his family’s longstanding commitment to social progress in Woodlawn.
A Legacy of Community Empowerment
Bishop Arthur M. Brazier was a relentless advocate for economic and social advancement, envisioning Woodlawn as a thriving, self-sustaining community. Today, under Dr. Byron T. Brazier’s leadership, the Apostolic Church of God continues this mission of progress, unity, and economic empowerment.
Positioned between the University of Chicago and the forthcoming Obama Presidential Center, Woodlawn Central aims to echo the prosperity of historic Black economic hubs like Greenwood and Chicago’s Bronzeville.
Four Pillars of Development
What distinguishes this project is its comprehensive approach built on four essential pillars:
- Physical Infrastructure: A masterfully designed, walkable environment that integrates seamlessly into Woodlawn’s existing fabric
- Digital Infrastructure: A tech-enabled district ensuring connectivity and innovation
- Communications Infrastructure: A platform for dialogue, collaboration, and cultural expression
- Economic Infrastructure: A catalyst for investment in Black-owned businesses, driving sustainable growth
The mixed-use development features multi-generational housing, commercial spaces prioritizing Black entrepreneurs, an integrated arts district, and high-quality transit connections.
“It’s about economic circulation—keeping dollars in the community and creating opportunities that empower residents rather than replace them,” Brazier emphasizes.
A Generational Investment
Environmental responsibility is fundamental to the project, with energy-efficient buildings and sustainable design principles throughout.
“We’re not just building—we are shaping the future. This is a generational investment that will redefine urban development and set a new standard for inclusive, sustainable growth in the Black community,” notes Brazier.
With groundbreaking planned for late 2025, Woodlawn Central represents a blueprint for how Black communities can lead their own development. It invites participation from residents, entrepreneurs, and investors who share the vision of equitable urban growth.
“Woodlawn Central is bigger than buildings—it’s a statement that we deserve the best, and we have the power to build it for ourselves,” Brazier reflects.
The development stands as a powerful testimony to what’s possible when communities have the resources and leadership to shape their own future—a model that will transform how cities approach development in historically marginalized neighborhoods for generations to come.
