Blueroomcare: Reimagining Mental Healthcare in Africa
Mental health is still widely misunderstood and deprioritized in many African communities. But Blueroomcare, founded by Moses Aiyenuro, is working to shift that reality.
Through a culturally relevant, tech-enabled platform, Blueroomcare is making mental healthcare more accessible, more affordable, and more accepted—on the continent and beyond.
In this conversation, Moses shares the personal experiences that inspired the platform, the roadblocks he’s overcome, and the bold future he envisions for mental health in Africa.
Mental healthcare is often seen as a luxury across the continent. What inspired you to tackle this challenge and build a platform like Blueroomcare?
Mental healthcare is often deprioritized in many African communities, seen as something for the privileged few. But I experienced firsthand how lack of access can deeply impact individuals and families.
Growing up at SOS Children’s Villages, I saw the silent struggles people faced and the stigma around seeking help. That experience shaped my resolve to build Blueroomcare—a platform that makes mental healthcare as accessible and essential as physical healthcare.
You’ve created a hybrid model combining online and in-person therapy, and made sessions insurance-covered. What were some of the biggest hurdles in building this infrastructure?
Bringing insurance-covered therapy to life meant tackling multiple challenges: getting insurers to recognize mental health as a reimbursable expense, building trust with businesses, and ensuring smooth tech-enabled service delivery.
Many insurers initially didn’t see the value in covering therapy, but we demonstrated how mental health impacts workplace productivity and healthcare costs.
Another hurdle was bridging the gap between online and in-person care, which required strong partnerships—like our collaboration with EHA Clinics—to provide hybrid therapy options.
Corporate mental health is still an emerging conversation in Africa. How have you seen businesses respond to Blueroomcare’s workplace wellness solutions?
When we introduced Blueroomcare Engage, our workplace wellness solution, some businesses were hesitant. Mental health in corporate Africa was still viewed as a personal issue rather than a business priority.
However, as companies saw the impact of stress and burnout on their teams, the conversation shifted. We’ve now partnered with leading insurers and employers, showing how mental wellness directly affects employee performance and retention.
Mental health is deeply stigmatized in many communities. How is Blueroomcare helping shift perceptions?
Stigma remains a major barrier, but we’re tackling it through education, accessibility, and community-driven engagement. We provide self-help resources, anonymous therapy options, and culturally relevant mental health programs.
Additionally, our partnerships with influencers, companies, and health providers are helping normalize the conversation. We want therapy to be seen as just another form of healthcare, like seeing a doctor for a check-up.
Looking ahead, what’s your vision for the future of mental healthcare in Africa—and how does Blueroomcare plan to lead or influence that evolution?
Our vision is bold: to improve the mental health of 1 billion people and become a $1 billion company by 2030. We’re starting with the diaspora, universities, and health plans in the UK and US, leveraging existing partnerships with Cigna, Athena, and other leading insurers.
Over time, we’ll expand our footprint across Africa, ensuring mental healthcare is not just available but affordable, insured, and seamlessly integrated into everyday life.
